I was going to call bullshit on Seth’s more recent post on the $139 Kindle (he says it is $90 too expensive) but he is 100% on the money: the Kindle at this stage is a powerful candidate for a razor and cartridges business model (don’t make money on the Kindle, use it as a gimmick to sell eBooks).

Lovely: how can you trust these leaked documents to be accurate when REPORTERS that were embedded with troops during these incidents find holes in the reports?

Two problems:

1. These are raw data, and war is fluid. You can’t pick just one report and assume everything in it is accurate and absolute (funny thing, that is the same of every work document I have read for the past 20 years or so!). You can’t get a full picture unless you have ALL documents at hand that deal with that particular incident.

2. These documents aren’t authenticated, and their contents have not been signed digitally. This means that you can’t tell who authored them, and if there has been any tampering with their contents since the document was published. What stops some reckless individual from peppering these reports with inaccuracies or blatant lies? There is no way for us to determine that the report is intact, or that it is even legitimate. All that we know is that so many thousand reports were leaked through an anonymous source.

So basically, we know nothing. What stops a clever group of individuals from holing up in a basement for three months and cranking out a few thousands of fake “leaked” reports on whatever and dump them on wikileaks in one shot?

This is funnier because I was arguing with a coworker today over certain data tables that were giving us some grief. I vividly recall complaining that a well-tuned SQL Server has no trouble spitting out more than 10,000 records in under a second.

These people SORTED a terabyte of data in just a minute.

I think my favorite is TR’s, but I am sure that Karla won’t be able to pick between Frederick Douglass’ book crammed office and Mark Twain’s writing hut. I would had picked Lloyd Wright’s drafting studio had you asked me back when I was still drafting by hand instead of with CAD (I was hardcore, I even had a huge drafting table that my dad had me built to my specifications).

This is why I only work at companies that build custom web-based, data driven applications, with specialization on workflow management solutions. Is it fun? Sometimes, but I don’t take a job expecting it to be a major source of entertainment and amusement. Instead I get a job EXPECTING TO GET PAID. Anything else I get out of the job is just icing on the cake, but amusement and entertainment are never part of the main criteria to take a job.

Just a test of AVCHD @ 1920x1080 on the Sony DSC-TX7. Windows Media Player wouldn’t even play it, and Picasa used Divx Plus to play it, which I thought was weird since Media Player didn’t have trouble playing the AVCHD @1440 x 1080. Even weirder, the software that ships with the camera didn’t have any trouble playing the video as long as I did not try to view it in full screen.

As for processing time when submitting to Youtube, there was a small delay, but it could easily be blamed on additional traffic due to Life in A Day. The actual processing part of the upload actually took a few seconds.

Add to that maybe 5-10 more minutes before the HD streams became available.
