Francisco "Paquito" Cordero has passed away at 77.... →
I am sad to learn that Paquito Cordero, a pioneer of Puerto Rican television, died today. He was 77. He was a cultural treasure to the Commonwealth, a genuinely funny guy that had a 50+ year career both acting in, and producing television shows that were watched by pretty much everyone in the island.

A warning to all Wordpress users
Please go to /wp-content/ and search each of your theme folders for a file called lol.php. If you find such a file, you have been compromised, either you got hacked already, or you are about to.

Veraperez.com compromised (again)
If you are one of my regular readers at veraperez.com, my wordpress install, which was brand new, was compromised sometime after 1 AM EDT today. The issue seems to be fixed, but it is one more nail in the wordpress coffin for all I can care. The attack originated in Kuwait (you’re welcome for Gulf War 1, assholes). Please consider changing your bookmark to either http://insomniaccoder.com/...

Court rules for white firefighters over promotions →
Maybe they need to learn how to do blind promotion boards, it is not so complicated: Anyone that is qualified (education, time on the job, things that can be measured objectively) takes an exam, which could be written, oral or both. Once you have a list of qualified personnel, pick the top X spots, which are the number of promotions you have to award. Have a panel review the personnel...

King Of Pop Dead At 12 →
It is sad that the only fitting obituary that has been published so far came from a humor publication. Everyone else is in a shark feeding frenzy, and The Onion actually came up with a very thoughtful (bordering on touching) way to announce Michael’s death.

Queue -> Twitter test
If this post shows up on Twitter, it means Tumblr fixed the issue with queued posts not triggering a Twitter update. FAIL It didn’t work, this hasn’t been fixed, and like a reader already pointed out, it’s been more than two months.

4,303 drivers →
That’s the total number of drivers arrested in my county in 2008 for texting while driving. Since we didn’t have a law against it, police simply tried to pitch it as “failure to pay full time and attention” while driving. House Bill 1876 goes into effect July 1, which makes The People’s Republic of Virginia the ninth state in the country to ban texting while driving. ...

ASP.NET Routing →
It only took Microsoft 9 years but we finally have the capability to use URLs that make sense, something that was possible with mod_write since the 18th century (or so it feels like). Thanks to Darth Null for showing me this article, it is a very tempting reason to start bumping our 2.0 applications to at least 3.5 just to use this feature.

Fallout 3: Point Lookout →
Buy a ticket and hop onboard the Duchess Gambit, as Tobar the Ferryman takes you to the strange seaside town of Point Lookout. What secrets does the dilapidated boardwalk hold? Who lives in the sprawling mansion? Why is the Punga Fruit so important? And what horrors lie in the depths of the murky swamp? Point Lookout is the most open-ended DLC yet, and allows you to explore an entirely new and...

Verizon Stops Seriously Competing On Price -... →
Good luck with that, especially with Comcast raising their speed tiers without raising prices. What they did here is raise every single tier, then added a new 50MB tier for $100/month. This is of course too rich for me, but bumping mine from 20MB to 30MB is only $10 more per month.

Tricky error in ASP.net 2.0
I just ran into this, but only in VS 2008: The page has one or more <asp:Content> controls that do not correspond with <asp:ContentPlaceHolder> controls in the Master Page. In a shocking show of restraint, I only pulled my hair for ten minutes before Googling it. The solution was STUPID: I had a server title tag like this: <title id="title1" runat="server" /> Nothing wrong...

Iran bans foreign journalists from covering... →
Dear Iranian Government, You made your bed, now you get to lie on it. It is clear that the revolution won’t be televised, but it will be Twittered. With most warm regards, Your decadent American Imperialist friends. P.S: Anyone that has children knows that the fastest way for something to happen is to try to forbid it with no explanation or justification. Banning the journalists is only...
