Japan Apologizes for Bataan Death March →
Well, now that this ugly business is behind us, we can finally right one of the most unfair INTENTIONAL injustices of World War II: the case of Colonel Wendell Fertig. Colonel Fertig was a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Corps of Engineers in the Philipines. When the Commonwealth was about to fall, he disobeyed his orders to surrender and instead decided to stay behind the lines as a guerrilla,...

Senior bowlers strike down Hillsboro purse thief →
This dumbass teenager decided to steal a couple purses from some old ladies at a bowling alley. Then things went terribly wrong (for him). The victims and other bowlers from the senior league chased him all over the place and eventually pinned him down until the cops came. They should have whooped his ass. I would have loved to see his arraignment even if he is a minor.

Diversity on the Supreme Court →
Sonia Sotomayor doesn’t look so diverse when you see her as one more person that went to college, then on to law school and government employee drawing a safe paycheck for the rest of her adult life (you could argue that her private practice work between 1984 and 1992 was not as “safe” but let’s be realistic here, hotshot ex ADAs don’t get laid off from law firms when...

The Incredible Shrinking Clintons →
Fascinating article on how President Obama effectively neutralized Bill and Hillary Clinton by bringing them into the cabinet. Money quote: Asked why he was naming some of his rivals to top administration jobs, President Lyndon B. Johnson said it best: “I’d rather have them inside the tent pissing out than outside pissing in.”

U.S. ‘Likely’ Could Intercept North Korean Missile →
Wouldn’t North Korea go bankrupt if they keep spending so much money in pissing off their rivals instead of trying to take care of their own country? Where is the money coming from?

tuneage: Regina Spektor - “Dance Anthem of the 80’s” Off her latest album, Far, out June 23rd. In a shocking, SHOCKING, turn of events, there are still some artists out there that sound distinctly unique instead of the homogenized crap that is being fed to this generation’s kids. The sad thing is that artists like Regina Spektor are maybe one in 200. Worse it is to look back at the...

GM trying to unload Saturn, Hummer - Autos →
And the GM death watch carries on. The sad thing is regardless what comes out of it, both Hummer and Saturn are being found unwanted. I don’t care much for Hummer, but Saturn is a company that was doing many things right. I can’t see how GM could take a good thing and fuck it up so badly.

Ceridian Benefits can kiss my ass
In this day and age of economic distress, I simply can’t figure out how ANY company in this country of ours can operate while being so casual about its receivables. Case in point: Ceridian Benefits. Ceridian is a COBRA manager. Their job is to deal with people that lose their employer health insurance coverage. By law when you lose your coverage, you may qualify under COBRA to keep your...

Presidential Fundraising Trips Leave Taxpayers... →
I guess one learns something new every day. I had no clue that for political trips the President’s party partially refunds the costs incurred in the trip. When one thinks about it, regardless of where he is, the President is a political entity, everything he does is political. This is no different than all previous holders of the office.

25 And Over: GROW UP →
karlaakins: Put on your big boy or girl pants and GROW UP, PEOPLE! I love how the article approaches chronic lateness. Time is the one thing that makes us all, rich and poor, equal. Don’t waste anyone’s time. Don’t be late to your appointments. Don’t turn in your work late.

Commentary: Don't go to war over Sotomayor →
Show of hands: how many of the people bitching for or against the nomination, can actually recite the Judge’s qualifications beyond: “Democrat Puerto Rican Female Judge from the Bronx.” Here’s my take (and remember, I am a first generation Puertorrican): who gives a shit? The way the game is played, the democrats propose a candidate and the republicans throw a hissy fit...

I love it when Slashdotters argue about religion. I am not exactly a fan of VS.net, but it gets the job done and most of the time it doesn’t fight me, for which I am deeply grateful. VSS sucks monkey balls.

Thomas the Tank Engine helps autistic kids... →
This is very true. PJ is autistic and has been addicted to Thomas the Tank Engine for years. He loves both the show and the toy trains, and whenever in train builder mode he would spend dead hours building and rebuilding track networks that criscross our living room. When I was younger I used to find the show creepy, but it felt completely natural when PJ started showing interest in it. The only...

GM bondholders not interested in debt-equity offer →
In Puerto Rico we have a saying: “Te quedastes sin la soga y sin la cabra.” (You left yourself without the rope and without the goat) This whole hard to get song and dance is going to look stupid when GM hits bankruptcy court and those bondholders get left with even less than 10% of whatever the company is going to be worth, if there is even a company left.

Autopsies of war dead reveal life-saving clues →
A little morbid article for Memorial Day, but no less fascinating. The US military has been doing autopsies on every casualty since 2001, the first time that this is done. Since 2004 they are also doing full-body CT scans, which they use to compile a database that has already been used to save lives out in the field. For example, they found that too many people with collapsed lungs were due to...

New problem for workers: cubicle graveyards →
The most depressing thing in the business world is to walk into an office with a cubicle island at 10% capacity, while you still remember what it looked like when it was bursting at the seams. It is trully depressing. The second most depressing thing is to watch a company surrender office space because they laid off a lot of people and can’t afford to pay rent on the unused floorspace. It...

To honor fallen comrades, they wash the Wall →
Very touching article on the volunteers that wash the names of their fallen comrades on the Vietnam War Wall in DC. I went through a similar experience as Michael Najarian, I visited the wall to read my own name on it. USMC PFC Pedro A. Vera, KIA August 20, 1968. Pedro was my first cousin.

Dear Treyarch/Activision/Anyone involved in Call...
Guys, the multiplayer promotion system is awesome, but it has some really stupid gaps that you are missing. You guys are simply not giving us enough reward for making the “big” rank jumps. Ask any soldier about the jump from Specialist/Corporal to Sergeant. Or from enlisted to Officer. Or from company grade to field grade. Or hell, the jump from Colonel to Brigadier General. All of...

Insomniacs always forget that they own a PVR
Why is it that when fighting an insomnia attack, I always get sucked into whatever I am watching on TV and it takes me an extra hour to remember that I have a PVR? One thing is to watch TV because I can’t sleep, but sometimes I stick around for an extra hour just because I want to finish whatever it is that I am watching. And right when there are 10 minutes left in the show, I remember that...

These children had a meeting with the President of the United States and were told to be there by 9:30 AM. The staff waited for them until 10:30 AM.
